Lithic or stone item which is produced by pecking, grinding, and polishing. Many lithic artifacts, such as projectile points and other stone tools, were made by percussion, or the striking of rock or other hard material against the targeted stone, in an attempt to create or maintain sharp edges. Groundstone items, however, were made with the intent of creating smooth surfaces or durable edges on artifacts such as adzes and celts, bowls, hatchets, pipes, net weights, pestles and mortars, and various decorative items.
